Step 3B: Copy and paste your data

Import you data directly from your spreadsheet by using the Copy and paste directly button:

3b 1

Highlight all the relevant data rows in your spreadsheet and simply copy and paste. As you can see from the example below it is perfectly fine to include other irrelevant columns.

Now to tidying your columns:

  1. Firstly, you must specify which row, if any, contains the headers for your data and which row contains your first row of data. If you do not have headers then choose 0 for the header and then 1 for the first row of data.3b 3
  2. Next, tidy up your columns. You can only upload two columns of data. A column containing location data and a column containing a piece of numeric data. If you have other irrelevant columns you can select to ignore them. step 3a 4
  3. Once this is complete select Next step.

Preview the data and once happy with it select Import and Save to Community Insight.

step 3a 5

Depending on the size of the dataset, this may take a few minutes, during which you may not be able to browse the rest of the site. But you can go and check your emails in another tab or window without affecting your upload.step 3a 9

Once imported, you will see the image below.step 3a 10

Now you need to activate your dataset. Go to Settings -> Manage Indicators.

Click Unassigned and you should see your new dataset in the list on the right.step 3a 7

Using the little cross to the left of your new dataset, drag it under the right theme. You may need to create a theme first, by clicking ADD THEME.step 3a 8

Then click on the theme under which you put your new dataset. Tick the box for map and, if you like, the dashboard. Remember that more than 10 indicators on the dashboard can get overwhelming, so if in doubt, leave it out!

Now return to mapview by selecting Map on the grey banner at the top. You should see your new dataset listed under its theme when you click Data.
